Free things to do in Market Harborough

Market Harborough is a great place to visit for a long weekend or even as a checkpoint stop on your way to somewhere else. The town is steep in history and there is plenty to keep visitors occupied, no matter the age.

Foxton Locks

This classic Market Harborough attraction is a must visit regardless of if you have a large budget or not. Foxton Locks is a major tourist attraction in Leicestershire year-round and is perfect for families, couples and solo trips.

The site has the longest and steepest staircase locks in the UK and is surrounded by Leicestershire’s beautiful countryside. Watch colourful narrowboats working their way through the waterway and enjoy the walks around the canal footpath.

Take your camera and a few pounds for an ice cream and drink at the local pub.

Harborough Museum

The Harborough Museum celebrates the town’s long history as a centre of trade and industry. Displays are constantly changing but there are a collection of 17th century toys, a reconstructed boot and shoemakers workshop and a unique 1st century Roman cavalry helmet. Entry is free but there may be a charge for special events and exhibitions.

Explore the town

Harborough is a town that you can happily get lost in. With independent shops aplenty and charming residential streets, there is lots for your eyes to feast on. Take some time for some window shopping or just embrace the town by having a wander around the place. There’s no price for that!

Picnic on the park

Welland Park is Market Harborough’s largest park and is perfect for a picnic on a hot day. There’s a wide range of activities for all the family, too. A large playground area, tennis courts, space for ball games and the Rose Garden which is beautifully maintained by the volunteers of Market Harborough in Bloom.
